AB: Ten stocks (listed) of this edible fungus were investigated. Five from Hawaii and one from Panama were found to be homothallic and fruited in single-spore cultures. The other 4 (2 from New Zealand, one from Florida and one from Louisiana, USA) were heterothallic and were shown to have a modified bifactorial mating pattern in which 2 A alleles and multiple B alleles were identified. Compatibility was observed between the Louisiana and Florida stocks and between the Louisiana and the New Zealand stocks. However, the Florida and New Zealand stocks were intersterile and produced only false-clamped mycelia when crossed. Because of the limited number of collections obtained for this study, the basis for intersterility was not identified.
